The sunshine through the east window – made of stained glass donated by the church’s rector in 1470 – scatters coloured light across the wonderfully wonky floor. Why not have a rest in the box pews? The only ones remaining in York, their high sides protected worshippers from draughts and gave them privacy during the service. Or study the fascinating monuments and memorials to worshippers long gone. Two boards record the names of the lord mayors of the city, including the “Railway King,” George Hudson – the one-time York MP who brought the first railways to York and then fell from grace over financial scandals tied to the deals.

Look out too for the stone piscina, used for “washing the Sacred Vessels after Mass,” and the squint in the south chapel wall – a gap allowing those in the chapel to see the altar – which enabled lepers to take part in services while being isolated from other worshippers.

Holy Trinity has cast its spell on many people, among them one of our finest poets. In his guide to English parish churches, John Betjeman wrote that the approach gives “a glimpse of churchyard with a weeping ash and a ledger stone – by far the most satisfactory entry to any York church.”
